Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis - English Setter

Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) is an inherited neurological disease that occurs in several breeds. The mutation responsible for NCL in English Setter is on the ceroid-lipofuscinosis, neuronal 8 (CLN8) gene. Symptoms usually develop between 1-3 years of age and include: uncoordination, difficulty swallowing, vision and hearing loss, rapid eye motion, and voice changes. Enlarged nerves in the forelimbs can also be detected. Seizures and tremors develop in the later stages of the disease, and progressively worsen, leading to death or euthanasia within 1-2 years of diagnosis.

VetNostic Laboratories’ genetic tests for Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis can reliably identify dogs that are either clear, or possess one or two copies of the NCL causing gene. This clear, carrier, or affected result can help breeders determine which animals to include in their breeding program.
